Around the rally
This 29th edition of the Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles du Maroc, a 100% women-only event, is dedicated to another woman: prominent Iranian lawyer and human rights activist Nasrin Sotoudeh, who is currently facing 38 years in prison and 148 lashes for “inciting corruption and prostitution” by defending women who removed their headscarves in public.
There are 314 Gazelles on this year’s start line, 78% of whom are doing the Rallye for the very first time. They are representing 13 different countries (France, Switzerland, Belgium, UK, Italy, Germany, Spain, Australia, Georgia, Lithuania, Morocco, Canada, USA).
The teams are competing in 4 different vehicle classes: 4×4 Class (126 teams including 2 trucks), Crossover Class (8 teams), SSV/Quad Class (13 teams), and e-Gazelle VINCI Immobilier Class (10 teams including 2 buggy prototypes).
Mother/daughter teams, teams of cousins, colleagues, sisters-in-law… the Rallye is rich in diversity. The participants are between the ages of 23 and 71, with an average age of 42. From business managers to aestheticians, engineers and doctors, they represent more than 220 different professions. But here, and until March 30, they are all Gazelles!
